In the City... Continued

  • More Entertainment - You'll find all the entertainment opportunities of a modern city. A visit to Granny's Opera House in nearby White's City is a must. Enjoy vaudeville skits and join in crowd sing-a-longs at this old-fashioned melodrama where the audience can boo, hiss and throw popcorn at the villain.
  • Fishing
The warm, slow moving waters of the Pecos River, alive with protected holes, brush piles and undercut banks, make the river a natural haven for channel catfish. Other game fish that thrive in local waters include white and black bass, crappie and walleye, among others. Trout can be found during cooler winter temperatures. Every night, fishermen can be found at their favorite fishing spots on the Pecos, armed with artificial lights and an assortment of baits. Be sure to get your license though... You can get that nearby at Courtesy Sporting and Pawn - 505-887-1811
  • Hunting
Some of the finest hunting is available around Carlsbad: antelope, elk, Barbary sheep, bighorn sheep, Javelina, Oryx, ibex, deer, bear, cougar, bobcat and more. For the fisherman, trout, bass, catfish, perch, bluegill, walleye and crappie can be found in area lakes. Carlsbad's Shooting Range Recreation Area offers 4 trap ranges, archery ranges, pistol range, small and large bore rifle ranges, shotgun range, and silhouette rifle range. Be sure to get your license though... You can get that nearby at Courtesy Sporting and Pawn - 505-887-1811
  • Golfing
Two eighteen hole courses are located in Carlsbad (Riverside Country Club and Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course). The municipal golf course also offers a lighted 9-hole par three course. A year round pass is unbelievably inexpensive!
  • Hiking and Backpacking
Over 2 1/2 miles of paved paths along the banks of the Pecos River provide opportunity for a leisurely or brisk walk. For the adventurous visitor, miles and miles of paths are available for hiking and backpacking in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and Lincoln National Forest.
  • Live Music and Dancing
Live music and dancing (fine dining too) can be enjoyed nightly at several establishments around town. Check with your park hosts for a current list or contact the local chamber of commerce.

  • Museums
Prehistoric bones, Apache Indian relics, and relics from pioneer ranching days when outlaws frequented the Guadalupes are just a part of what you'll see at the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center. A collection of McAdoo paintings along with bird carvings by Jack Drake are also on display. At the Million Dollar Museum in White's City you can view relics of the old west, doll collections and a 6,000 year-old mummified Indian as well as many other unusual things.
  • Riverwalk
One of the most popular Pecos River attractions is the 4.5-mile-long Riverwalk flanking its banks. The Riverwalk gives residents and visitors a scenic path to enjoy a leisurely stroll or brisk walk. On their journey, visitors will likely see fishermen, many with their children or grandchildren, friendly ducks hoping to score an edible treat, benches to provide a relaxing break, and picnickers enjoying a cool breeze beneath a big shade tree. The walk begins at the railroad bridge at the north end of Riverside Drive and extends along the west side of the river to the Bataan Bridge on Greene Street. Walkers can either stop at Bataan Bridge, take a left and cross the river to the other side for a short hike, or cross Greene Street and head south to lower Tansill Dam and back up along the east side of the river for a longer trek back to the railroad crossing. A walking bridge near Tansill Dam allows visitors to stroll out to the middle of the river to view the surroundings and cross to the other side.
  • Shopping
Southwest specialties and turquoise jewelry are just a few of the unique items you'll find in Carlsbad's myriad of shops. Everything from the unusual to everyday needs is available.
  • Swimming
More than 1,000 feet of beach area along a dedicated portion of the Pecos River provides swimming fun for the whole family. Lifeguards are on duty Memorial Day through Labor Day. Enjoy a picnic and spend the day at Carlsbad's Riverfront Park (over a mile of shaded, grassy expanse along the riverfront).
