In the City...
There is something for everyone to do in Carlsbad, New
Mexico!
- Biking - Paved biking and walking trails run along the banks of the
canal in the city. Biking is also available in
Guadalupe Mountains National Park and
Lincoln National Forest.
- Boating & Water Activities
- Lake Carlsbad, located in the heart
of the city, offers boating, fishing, skiing, jet ski rentals, and paved boat
ramps. Take a cruise up the river on the historic George Washington Paddlewheel
Boat. Paddle boat rentals are also available.
- Cultural Happenings - There is a wide variety of cultural
opportunities in Carlsbad. Carlsbad Community Theater provides theatrical
performances from musicals to dramas. Carlsbad Community Concert Association
hosts a wide variety of fine musical performers throughout the year. Fine works
of art from area artists are available through the
Carlsbad Area Art Association. Don't miss these special events for a unique
cultural experience:
- Discover Carlsbad Driving Tour -
You'll see the major sights of the
city along this driving route, including the Pecos Flume (listed in Ripley's Believe It Or Not as "The River That Crosses
Itself"). Easy to follow trailblazer signs mark the tour, and informational
signs are provided.
- Dining - Carlsbad boasts a wide variety of
eating establishments. There's something for everyone, including fine dining and
regional specialties.
- Family Entertainment - There are different attractions along the
Pecos river for the whole family. A rocket slide, merry-go-round and other kiddy rides are scattered along the west side. At the boat docks are covered
benches. And just a few steps away is Port Jefferson, a shaded concession stand
open daily from May to August. South of the boat dock is the Municipal Beach
Park, where picnic tables and lots of shade trees provide an excellent place for
family outings. The park is a staging area for many annual activities and
parades in Carlsbad, as well as a perfect vantage point to watch the spectacular
July 4th fireworks display held annually during Western Week.
- The park is also home port to paddle boats. Paddle boats that seat up to
five people are available weekdays 2pm until 7pm and weekends 12 until dusk. The
cost is $6.00 for 30 minutes. Bumper boats are available for $3.00 for 15
minutes. They seat one person and a small child. For more information call (505)

- Motorized personal watercraft is also available to rent. Water skiing is
also a popular pastime on the river. The park features boat ramps and a swimming
area complete with a sandy beach. Lifeguards are on duty when swimming is
permitted.
- On the east side of the river is the Riverwalk Recreation Center, where
indoor sports activities, video games, pool tables and concessions are offered.
Further north is a campground. The Pecos River Village is the staging area for
the very popular Christmas on the Pecos.
- Visitors can also take a 40-minute tour back through time aboard the George
Washington, once a coal-driven paddle-wheel boat with an ornamental smokestack.
The 40-minute ride costs $3.00 for adults and $1.50 for children under 12. A
tour talk with historical facts about the boat and the river area is given by
the captain. The boat leaves the beach area dock every hour from 1pm to 7pm on
Saturday and Sunday and once on weekdays leaving around 5 or 6pm. For more

- After a day visiting Carlsbad area attractions, check out the
Fiesta Drive-In, one of few family
drive-in theaters remaining in the country. The three-screen drive-in features
the latest sound system technology which can be heard over select AM and FM
